Breatharianism … huh? That was my first reaction when a friend told me she was changing into another eating lifestyle. Scratching my head, I thought, “wait, I haven’t even gotten into the full swing of being a vegetarian yet and here is something new and even more life changing. For an ignorant me,  being vegetarian was the ultimate sacrifice of turning back from the gastronomic delights I’ve been used to.

Decades ago, I was trying to lose weight  and was battling with a hormonal imbalance and a myoma that made me bleed profusely and was looking into an alternative treatment to avoid a hysterectomy.  A vegetarian doctor friend gave me a list of  food to avoid, I told him, “what can I eat? everything I’m eating is in your list.”  He just gave me a smug smile or was it a smirk and said, “that’s why you’re overweight and sick.”  Ouch … that hurt and pricked my pride!

And so, I embarked on and ON again OFF again foray into the world of vegetarianism. Not eating pork or meat was easy because I don’t really crave for it, but preparing a meal for two with one a carnivorous, whining elderly mother was, and still is a frustrating challenge. Her whining that she was not trying to lose weight and she felt weak if she can’t eat pork or beef once in awhile, made me gave up the cause of vegetarianism then.

But, I’m back again because there is someone else who will prepare the food for us and a younger sister who decided to live with us prefers vegetables than meat too. Alleluia!!!  For a month now, I’m pork free …yehey!!! I was feeling proud of myself when I heard there is another purer, cleaner diet … AIR!  Oh no, this is the ultimate penance for my sins …

Breatharianism or  Inedia is living on air and not even drinking … OH NO,  NO!!!  This can not be … hahaha huhuhu …. I’ll go crazy with nothing to munch on and feel the heaviness in my tummy. Oh sigh, this air diet is not for everyone, this is for special people who wants to expand their consciousness.  Although, I would like to experience this broadening awareness, I prefer to be conscious rather than be unconscious because of hunger.

Big D Equipment recovered a generator and trailer worth $15,000 that were stolen from a location in Martin County, through GPS tracking devices according to a news report of NewsWest 9 on August 15, 2012.

The GPS tracking devices were installed in Big D Equipment’s oilfield machineries after an escalation of oilfield thefts in the area as a result of the oil boom. The recovery of  stolen goods from oilfield companies was becoming increasingly difficult for law enforcement officers in Martin County to address since they were getting twice as much call load.

Deputy Chance Rainer of the Martin County Sheriff Department was very well pleased with the call he received from Big D Equipment reporting the theft and the location where it can be found which was 400 miles away in Van Zandt County. He said, “Since the boom started, our call load has drastically increased. “I’d say we are getting at least one to two cases a day, like I say this is one of the first ones that I’ve had where we can actually follow up and have some good information as far as GPS to find it.”

The installation of GPS tracking devices by oilfield companies have indeed made it easier and faster for law enforcement officers to recover stolen goods. Before, it was difficult for them to recover stolen oilfield equipment, because most business owners do not keep a record of serial numbers and other important data that will help them in locating and identifying the items  especially if it has been moved very much farther from their area of jurisdiction.

Big D Equipment’s investment on the installation of GPS tracking devices in their oilfield machineries not only prevented the loss of valuable machinery it also made the job easier and faster for law enforcement officers in the area where they have their oilfield location to go after thieves who have no idea that they can now be easily be tracked down and caught red-handed before they can dispose and enjoy the spoils of their ill-begotten wealth.

Information on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) with obstruction will reduce the anxiety of men  over 40 yrs. old and their families to know that this is a common male disease relative to aging that is similar to having gray hairs according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC). Provided there are no other health problems causing the enlargement of the prostate gland and difficulty in urination, Medline Plus says, “it is not cancer, and it does not raise your risk for prostate cancer.”

Cause

There is no known definite cause why the prostate gland enlarges over time although it had been correlated that it occurs mostly in older men and it doesn’t occur when the testicles have been removed. Aside from these correlation, the following theories were cited by the (NKUDIC) as factors that may cause the prostate gland to enlarge as man ages: the imbalance in the production of sex hormones, testosterone (male hormone) and estrogen (female hormone); the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) a substance derived from the testosterone in the prostate  which  accumulates and encourages the growth of cells; and a suggestion from researchers that BPH develop from an instruction given to cells early in life to reawaken and grow and be sensitive to hormones that influence growth.

The prostate gland is a part of the male reproductive system situated  in front of the rectum just under the bladder where urine is stored. The urethra which is the channel where urine flows out of the body passes through the two lobes composing the walnut size prostate gland, similar to passing through a doughnut hole. When the prostate gland enlarges which is also medically known as Benign Prostatic Hypertropy, it presses on the urethra causing the obstruction of the  flow of urine out of the body thickening  the bladder walls  and irritating it.

The problems associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia with obstruction is associated with the weakening and loss of the bladder’s ability to empty itself  due to the frequent contraction it made when it was irritated even when there was only a small amount of urine due to the narrowing of the urethra.

Symptoms

The symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland is different among men but it commonly involves changes or problems with urination.  The Mayo Clinic lists the following symptoms: weak urine stream; difficulty starting urination; stopping and starting while urinating; dribbling at the end of urination; frequent or urgent need to urinate; increased frequency of urination at night (nocturia); straining while urinating; not being able to completely empty the bladder; blood in the urine (hematuria); urinary tract infection; formation of stones in the bladder and eventually impaired kidney function.

Treatment

Treatment options for BPH with obstruction include medication, surgery and minimally invasive surgery according to the Mayo Clinic. The best treatment choice will depend on the severity of the symptoms, prostate size, age, other medical conditions present and the preference of the patient from the information gathered in consultation with his physician.

To treat moderate symptoms, medications using alpha blockers and 5 alpha reductase inhibitors or a combination of the two drugs are the most common treatment. Alpha blockers like terazosin (Hytrin), doxazosin (Cardura), tamsulosin (Flomax), alfuzosin (Uroxatral) and silodosin (Rapaflo) works quickly to relax the bladder neck muscles and muscle fibers in the prostate to make it easier to urinate after a day or two. The side effect is a harmless condition called retrograde ejaculation where the semen does not go out of the penis but goes back to the bladder.

5 alpha reductase inhibitors like finasteride (Proscar) and dutasteride (Avodart) works best for very enlarge prostate. It shrinks the prostate by preventing hormonal changes causing growth of the prostate. Improvement may take several weeks or months and while taking the medication may cause erectile dysfunction, decreased sexual desire or retrograde ejaculation.

For patients not responding to medication and whose symptoms are severe, surgery will be recommended  by the physicians. There are many types of surgery to choose from which all treats the enlarged prostate tissue that blocks the flow of urine which will reduce the size of the prostate gland and open the urethra. The side effects for all type of prostate surgery include retrograde ejaculation, incontinence and impotence.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) with obstruction is a common disease among men over 40 years old with no known cause. Information of this medical condition can help in treating  the symptoms on its early stage and prevent complications that may damage bladder and kidney functions.

A drinking problem starts when drinking alcohol causes adverse effects to the  health, family, work and interpersonal relationships of an individual.

Ethanol, a type of alcohol present in beer, wines and spirits is made up of very small molecules that quickly reaches the brain within 30 seconds from ingestion. They can easily penetrate the barrier between the bloodstream and the brain and  when ethanol, a depressant comes in contact with a neurotransmitter called gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) in an area where the central nervous system is controlled, the response of neurons slows down.

This is the   beginning of intoxication,  where the excess alcohol consumed above the  tolerance level for alcohol of an individual gradually changes the initial effect of alcohol from cheerfulness and relaxation into blurred vision and coordination problems as more alcohol is consumed.

A drinking problem related to alcohol has four types:

Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse is getting drunk  when drinking and becoming a threat and hazard to one’s self and others.

Binge Drinking

Binge drinking, a drinking pattern of not drinking often but getting drunk when one does.

Psychological Dependence

Psychological dependence, a drinking habit to relax, forget problems,  become confident and feel happy.

Alcohol Dependence

Alcohol dependence, a state in which the body and brain of  a person needs alcohol to make them feel okay. Having developed a tolerance for alcohol, increased consumption is needed to feel the same effect. Experiences withdrawal symptoms if they suddenly quit drinking after prolonged use.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal symptoms range from mild to severe, depending on the degree of chemical dependency. Some mild symptoms are: nervousness, shakiness, irritability and fatigue. The severe symptoms are: Delirium tremens were one experiences confusion and visual hallucination; convulsions or seizures and “black outs,” (recollection of drinking episode is totally forgotten).

The tipping point that makes drinking, a drinking problem is the repeated consumption of  alcohol exceeding the standard amount of 10 grams of alcohol per hour that the liver can metabolize. A standard drink  is equal to 300 cc regular beer with 5% alcohol content; 3-4 ounces of  wine with a 12% alcohol content; or 1 ounce of  80 “proof”, 40% alcohol content hard liquor.

In excess of this amount, the liver whose normal function is to metabolize fatty acids gets burned out  until it can no longer metabolize alcohol or anything else resulting to cirrhosis. Liver damage leads to complications affecting other organs and deteriorating bodily functions that negatively affects the quality of life.

Help for alcoholism starts with your sincere desire to get over your drinking problem. Family and friends can merely give moral support and encouragement as you battle with the inner  struggle to let go the bottle. Seek professional help because you can’t  do it entirely on your own.

There are many treatments and programs to help you, but these won’t be successful if you are not  yet fully committed to make drastic changes to the lifestyle that damaged your health, hurt your family, ruined relationships, affected your work and finances and got you into legal problems.

Stay away from anyone who will entice you back to drinking, make new friends and change your environment. Inform family, friends and acquaintances that you are turning your back from alcohol. There will be some who won’t believe and tease you with a whiff of your favorite drink but  there will be more who will push them away and gently guide you to a safer and caring company.

Look  for interests that will take your mind off alcohol: go back to your favorite sport,   learn new things to entertain you.

Nourish your body by eating good food, sleeping well and exercise to replenish and supplement depleted nutrients to repair the damage done by the toxicity of alcohol.

Help for alcoholism is varied, there are traditional treatment for alcoholism, counseling and therapy  and alternative treatment methods like yoga and acupuncture.

In a study of Dr. Randolph  T.G.. He says that alcoholism  is a symptom of an advanced food allergy to the food source of alcoholic beverages which are carbohydrate-rich grains, fruits and vegetables. An alcoholic who has an advanced food allergy for the food source craves for the food instead of disliking it.

Since alcohol is the catalyst for the quick absorption of the food throughout the gastro-intestinal tract, eating the food by itself doesn’t give the quick fix that alcohol can. When alcoholics stop drinking and continue to eat sugar, corn or fruit base, these foods trigger cravings. This is the reason why relapses are common and trying to stay sober is a struggle for alcoholics on recovery programs.

A combination of traditional treatment methods and an alternative treatment method that looks into changes in diet, elimination of sugar and refined foods from consumption, supplementation of depleted vitamins, amino acids and minerals, treatment of hypoglycemia and food allergies will be a great help for alcoholism.

Prevent break-ins into your homes by assessing its security risks. Be vigilant in noting household practices that have to be changed and weak points that  need to be urgently addressed for the safety and security of your homes.

Break-ins usually occur when nobody is home. So, whether you’re going for a brief  walk or  planning to go on a long vacation,  always remember these simple and basic safety and security measures to prevent break-ins into your homes.

Lock  up all your doors with good quality door locks that will prevent burglars from kicking in your doors. Use double deadbolts if it is allowed in your area. For sliding doors, lock it and put a metal rod on the base to make it  difficult to open.

Check your windows always!  Don’t leave it half  open even if you’re only going out for a brief walk. Secure your windows with grills so that burglars can’t enter easily when they smash the glass and put a mechanism that will prevent  windows from raising enough for someone to crawl through.

Keep garden tools and other equipment that can be used to gain entry into your homes out of  sight.

Leave your spare key with a trusted neighbor because experienced burglars already know your “secret hiding places.” Your neighbor can keep watch on your house and prevent break-ins.

Illuminate your house and perimeter areas. Using photosensitive bulbs that will automatically go on and off are energy efficient and useful when you are away rather than continuously lit lights that will reveal your absence.

Cut or trim trees that can be used as access to upper story windows and balconies.

Don’t leave boxes of expensive appliances outside your home for burglars to know there are items worth breaking into.  Reuse or recycle them instead.

Don’t  introduce yourself to the community of thieves by painting your name on the mailbox.  Getting your telephone number will be easy and they can use it to check if somebody is home.

Arrange with your mailman and newspaper delivery service to suspend deliveries while you are on vacation. An overflowing mailbox and a yard littered with newspapers are sure indicators that nobody is home.

Use a picket fence or chain link for your privacy fence so that your house can be seen from the road and neighbors will see suspicious activities.

Following these safety and security measures will prevent break-ins into your homes, but don’t be complacent because burglars do keep themselves up to date in their trade.

My Weight Loss Coach

Losing weight is a perennial difficult task for people who are “weight challenged.” The current diet fad, the newest exercise machine and the new sports gym and exercise facility may help in shedding off some extra pounds but the moment the novelty wears off and you go back to your usual routine, you will regain the lost weight and gain some more. This “yo-yo” effect  will ultimately disrupt the physiological signals of our body.

The saying, “Mothers know best” may apply for these weight loss tips that are guaranteed, tried and tested over the years.

Don’t buy new clothes

When your clothes start to be a tight fit, don’t hurry up to the nearest boutique to buy new clothes. Head off instead to the nearest gym or start exercising to lose the weight gained and start monitoring your food intake to control your appetite.

Wear fitting clothes

Clothes are like molds of our body. If they fit right, our body will be confined and shaped according to its mold and stay right there. The comfort and freedom of loose clothes makes our body expand up to where it gets constricted. Loose clothes don’t make us aware that our arms, waists, hips and thighs are already getting wider. So, wear clothes that show your figure, a trim waist. Snap on a belt to gather your waist; don’t get used to garterized waistlines. Wear girdles to discipline your tummy not to balloon out of proportion. The corsets and girdles  worn by queens and princesses of long ago, surely is convincing enough for you to yearn for those waistline that can be encircled with their prince’s arms.

Don’t sit or sleep after eating

Sitting or sleeping after a heavy meal adds to the love handles and saddlebags. Do you know that pigs lie down when they are full? Don’t be like the meal that you just ate, take a stroll for at least 15 minutes to help the digestion process and decrease the flab.

Drink something warm after meals

Have you ever wondered why Chinese and Japanese ladies are so slim? Their   custom of drinking hot tea after meals helps in keeping them fit because the hot or warm fluid prevents oily foods from coagulating and turning into fat deposits unlike cold water and beverages.

You don’t have to eat it all

When you are already full, don’t over stuff yourself so as to get the most of your money’s worth while eating out with large servings or buffet service. Curb your appetite, so it will not ruin your attire.

Move that body!

Exercise may not propel you to jiggle your body, but the vision resulting from a saying; “if you don’t use it, you will lose it,” may  just be the right kick in the butt  for you to make an effort in making your body move once in awhile to sweat out the excess calories you have accumulated.  A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits are sure ways of piling up pounds after pounds of unsightly, flabby arms, protruding  tummies and sagging butts. A brisk walk, 30 minutes per day for at least 4 times a week is good enough than nothing at all.

Losing weight and maintaining it for keeps is a great challenge indeed, but don’t give up easily because you can’t lose the pounds that you have accumulated for years in just a week or a month of exercise and diet. Be realistic with your weight loss goals and be consistent with your efforts and soon you will notice the results.
